The School Board and APS staff need to hear from parents and ODL supporters that maintaining current year funding in the 2019-2020 budget is critical to STEM and outdoor education.
This investment makes sense and is cost-effective because the nonprofit Arlington Outdoor Education Association (AOEA) provides 225 acres of land and buildings essential for environmental education at the Outdoor Lab. The AOEA was founded 50 years ago by an Arlington science teacher who saw the value in giving students opportunities to learn science “in the field.”

Dear Members of the Arlington Co School Board:
I urge the School Board to maintain funding in the 2019-2020 budget to support hands-on, science education at the Outdoor Lab. Including funding equal to the current school year will ensure the school system can continue to provide unique STEM-learning opportunities for students in Arlington schools.
The School Board took a tremendously positive step by adding resources to the budget this year for the Outdoor Lab. Thanks to this investment, the hard work of the APS science team, and the dedication of Lab staff, more of our students are applying and strengthening their science, math, and other skills at the Outdoor Lab.
PLEASE ADD A SENTENCE OR TWO ABOUT THE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE YOUR CHILD OR CHILDREN HAVE HAD AT THE OUTDOOR LAB OR THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTING THE OUTDOOR LAB PROGRAM.
I appreciate the importance of balancing a range of priorities across the growing school system. Maintaining current year funding for the Outdoor Lab is especially cost-effective based on the partnership with the Arlington Outdoor Education Association (AOEA). As you know, the AOEA provides state-of-the-art education facilities and 225 acres of land for hands-on lessons. Through this partnership, the Association pays the capital expenses for the property and facilities – freeing the school system of these expenses.
To build on the progress this year, please provide level funding in the 2019-2020 budget for school system staff and transportation for the Outdoor Lab.
Thank you very much.
