The Outdoor Lab welcomes Girl Scouts of Nation’s Capital and National Capital Area BSA scout groups from Arlington, Virginia, who are interested in helping maintain the Outdoor Lab and protecting this treasured natural resource.
Some ways scouts can volunteer at the Outdoor Lab:
- Volunteer at our Fall and Spring Open Houses;
- Attend a Volunteer Work Day (individually or as a troop);
- Plan a service project as a troop, pack or service unit — some examples: remove invasive species and plant native ones, conduct trail maintenance, assist with data collection, and more!
- Teen scouts may partner with the Outdoor Lab to complete their Girl Scout Silver or Gold Award or Scouts BSA Eagle Scout Award; and
- Rising high school juniors or seniors may apply to serve as a student Board Member, elected each spring for a one-year term.

If you are interested in working with the Outdoor Lab, please fill out our brief Volunteer Interest Form and we’ll find a role that fits your troops’ interests and available time.
Once a project has been accepted, the following will need to be completed prior to your scheduled activity:
- Sign a group volunteer agreement (provided by volunteer coordinator);
- Submit ODL Volunteer Waiver for all volunteers participating in your project; and
- Provide Insurance Certificate (if required).
Troops who are volunteering at the Lab may also be permitted to camp overnight with advance approval and in accordance with scout guidelines. Our facilities can support a maximum of about 75 for an overnight, including kids and chaperones, with tent platforms and field camping options. The Lab does have bathrooms and our kitchen may be available with prior permission. The Animal Lab is not typically available for group use except as a severe weather shelter.
Please email [email protected] to inquire about camping availability.
